STATEMENT
My painting started in graffiti but picked up the qualities of its settings instead. You generally write graffiti in ugly, cutty places, sometimes in the middle of nowhere. I did. And I was captivated by those walls — displaying the tension between manmade structures and the elements. Succumbing to the slow pummeling of exposure. Water. Wind. Freeze, thaw. Erosion and eventual collapse. Witnessing a decades-long change in a single frame. And noticing places that way formed the foundation of my visual language.
Painting is a responsive process for me. I mainly work in spray paint, stains, smears, and other chemical reactions, materials that leave my work with the kind of gauziness and melancholy that accompanies memory. A focus on unconventional and salvaged materials allows me to bring my work into space and keep experimenting.
